Ugnayang Pang-agham Tao (Anthropological Association of the Philippines) will spearhead the 37th Annual Conference on maritime cultures, spaces and networks dubbed “Dagat ug Kinabuhi” from October 22 to 24 at the Silliman University, Dumaguete City.
A Visayan phrase meaning “the sea and life,” Dagat ug Kinabuhi signifies an in-depth exploration on the maritime culture of the Filipinos. The conference also aims to create a venue for regional, interdisciplinary forum to discuss issues revolving around the maritime context of Filipino culture.
The conference will delve on the intricacies of maritime culture in the country through
creative presentations, posters, short films and videos. There will also be paper presentations on maritime heritage conservation, lifeways and histories, claims and conflicts over water, transport, trade, inland seas and inter-island linkages, sea or island-oriented identities, a look on the archipelago as a nation, anarchic diversity, fragmented geography, and development frameworks, among others.
Patrick Flores, curator of the Philippine Pavilion in the recently conducted Venice Art Biennale, joins the roster of speakers alongside Kyoto University Center for Southeast Asian Studies Director Hiromu Shimizu, University of the Philippines-Manila Pharmacology Professor Isidro Sia, RP-China relations expert Teresita Ang See, and multi-awarded broadcast journalist, Howie Severino.
