THE Filipinas Institute of Translation Inc. (FIT), in collaboration with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Arts and Letters (KAL), will hold the Sawikaan 2014: Pagpili ng Salita ng Taon,
The event coincides with the Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Pagpapayaman ng Wikang Filipino (National Conference on the Enrichment of the Filipino Language), to be held from September 25 to 27, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Pulungang Recto, Bulwagang Rizal of the Faculty Center , UP Diliman, Quezon City.
The conference is also endorsed by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
The Sawikaan is an important project, which features selecting the most important word that prevailed in the discourse of the Filipino in the past year. Chosen Word of the Year in the past are canvass (2004), jueteng or huweteng (2005), lobat (2006), miskol (2007), jejemon (2010), and wangwang (2012).
For this year’s Sawikaan, nominated words include bossing, Filipinas, hashtag, imba, kalakal, endo, PDAF, selfie, whistle blower, storm surge, riding-in-tandem, CCTV, and peg.
Some of these words are used in gaming and technology, popular media, social networks and news. Some became prominent because of political controversies and disasters. At the Sawikaan, one will witness how these words are given interpretations and are championed by participants to be the Word of the Year 2014.
FIT believes that this project is a creative and effective strategy to highlight the dynamism of the Filipino language.
Besides choosing the Word of the Year, respected educators, administrators and language scholars are invited to shed light on relevant language issues.
This year, the theme of the conference is “Wika ng Kahandaan, Kahandaan sa Wika” (Language of Preparedness, Preparedness in Language), focusing on the use of language in various fields such as education, disaster and social media.
There will also be a teaching demo, expected to provide suggestions on the method of interactive language teaching apt for the implementation of the K to 12 program of DepEd.
A workshop where teachers can discuss their needs and issues will also be held. The sentiments will be forwarded to the Department of Education to find resolution in preparation for the upcoming implementation of the K-12 program next years.
Non-refundable registration fee is P3,000 (for snacks, lunch, handouts, kits, conference bags, ID, certificate, Sawikaan book). Interested parties and individuals must register before September 14. Payment on or before September 19 will get 10 percent discount.
