IT is in the historic city of Iloilo that the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) will host the Heritage Conservation Summit 2014 in partnership with the city government of Iloilo City and the city’s Cultural Heritage Conservation Council, happening from October 24 to 26.
Now on its third year, the summit will run with the theme “Revitalizing Old Downtowns,” which aims to bring together participants from the national government, local government units, local historical and heritage societies, the academe, heritage conservation practice and allied professions, architecture and real estate sectors, tourism, and the media.
Its primary objective is to discuss and exchange knowledge on revitalizing old downtown areas and best practices in heritage conservation in historic old quarters and districts in the Philippines. Also to be tackled are recent developments, challenges and opportunities in the conservation of heritage. The presentations will include successful experiences of local government units and community conservation groups in revitalizing their historic downtown areas.
Case studies on the revitalization of historic business districts of Escolta, Manila and Calle Real, Iloilo City, by Dr. Kristin Treñas, president of the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council, will be presented; as well as case studies on Taal, Batangas, about the revitalization of a historic town by Ernesto Villavicencio, president of Taal Active Alliance Legion; and on Angeles City, Pampanga, about the removal of street wires in historic center. Dr. Fernando Zialcita of the Cultural Heritage Studies Program, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and the Ateneo de Manila University will lecture on “Creating Style Guides for Heritage Districts.”
Welcome remarks will be delivered by HCS chairman Gemma Cruz-Araneta, while keynote address will be delivered by Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
There are 200 available slots for the summit. It will be a one-day affair, with optional educational tours of heritage buildings and sites in Iloilo before and after the conference. Participants will learn more about the importance of heritage to revitalizing towns and cities.
The registration into the summit will include conference kits and meals. Pre-register by September 26 to avail of discounted rates. Both optional educational tours have separate fees, details of which we will send via e-mail.
