The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is set to launch “Diwang: Sagisag Kultura ng Filipinas,” an institutional flagship project of the Subcommission on Cultural Dissemination (SCD), involving its national committees on Communication, Cultural Education, and Language and Translation,
Diwang is a program that aims to promote, highlight and foster appreciation for Philippine culture images and symbols, for these symbols to be part of the consciousness of the Filipino, guiding them in the molding of their national identity.The program has three components, namely the “Sagisag Kulturang Filipino Competition,” the conference for teachers and demonstration on culture-based lesson exemplar, and the exhibition of Filipino cultural icons at different local governments.
The icons competition
The Sagisag Kulturang Filipino Competition is a nationwide contest on Philippine cultural symbols with participating students from elementary and high school coming from 17 regions of the country, accompanied by teachers with background in cultural education courses. Participants of the “Kaguruang Makabayan” seminar by the NCCA as well as partner higher education institutions will also be joining.
The contest aims to promote Filipino cultural symbols to more teachers and students as well as to promote the teaching and learning of more Filipino cultural symbols through a contest on creating better lesson plans on Filipino, English, math, science, social studies, values education, arts/music, TLE and PE Health by teachers with advanced skills in creating lesson exemplars, which will be distributed to schools.
The elementary division has team contestants while the high school division has individual contestants. Contests have been held at the University of the Cordilleras, Baguio City on August 5; University of Northern Philippines, Vigan City on August 6; Isabela State University, Echague, Isabela on August 7; Barasoain Church, NHCP Hall, Malolos, Bulacan on August 8; Colegio San Juan de Letran, Calamba, Laguna on August 12; Oriental Mindoro National High School, Calapan, Oriental Mindoro on August 13; Bicol University, Legazpi City on August 14; and Leandro Locsin Auditorium, NCCA Building, Intramuros on August 15.
The on-going program is scheduled to be held at the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City on August 19; Holy Name University, Tagbilaran, Bohol on August 20; Northwest Samar State University, Calbayog City on August 21; Western Mindanao State University, Zamboanga City on August 26; Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City on August 27; University of Southeastern Philippines, Davao City on August 28; Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College, Gen. Santos City on September 2; Philippine Normal University Agusan, Agusan del Sur on September 3; and DepEd ARMM Regional Office, Cotabato City on September 4.
Sub-island cluster level will be held on September 12 in Malolos, Bulacan, for CAR, Region I, II and III; September 19 in Tagbilaran, Bohol, for Region VI, VII and VIII; September 23 at the NCCA, Manila, for Region IVA, IVB, and NCR; September 26 in Cagayan de Oro for Region IX, X and XI; and September 2 in Koronadal, South Cotabato, for Region XII, XIII and ARMM. Finals will be held on October 3 in Koronadal, South Cotabato, with the winners of the five sub-island clusters.
On the other hand, the contest for teachers will focus on creating lesson exemplars incorporating Philippine cultural icons. These icons can be found in the NCCA website www.ncca.gov.ph and other instructional materials published by the Philippine Cultural Education Program (PCEP) of the NCCA. The contest is only for teachers who have graduate diplomas in cultural education and those with certificates of participation in the seminars “Kaguruang Makabayan” conducted by NCCA-PCEP.
Other components
The second component is a conference for teachers and demonstration on culture- based lesson exemplar. It will tackle the teaching of Filipino, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Values Education, Arts /Music, TLE and PE/Health with Philippine cultural icons as material or subject
Conferences and demos will be held from September 12 to 14 at the La Consolacion University, Malolos, Bulacan; from September 19 to 21 at Holy Name University, Tagbilaran, Bohol; and from October 2 to 4 at Notre Dame University, Koronadal, South Cotabato.
The Philippine cultural icons exhibit will be mounted in public spaces of selected local governments. It will include the eight winning lesson exemplars in 2013. The exhibition will be from September 12 to October 30 at Robinson Malolos, Malolos, Bulacan; from September 19 to October 30 at Robinson Bohol, Tagbilaran, Bohol; and from October 2 to October 30 at the city hall of Koronadal, South Cotabato.
