Cremation in the Bible

Following a Catholic priest’s guide, The Sunday Times Magazine picked up the following biblical verses that discuss earthly body and its mortality.

In the Old Testament, Genesis 3:19 says, “You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were reformed. You were made from soil, and you will become soil again.”

An alternative text to Genesis 3:19 reads, “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Chapter 15 of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (New Testament) describes the death of the earthly body and the resurrection of the spiritual body. Verses 36 to 38 says, “When you plant a seed in the ground, it does not sprout to life unless it dies. And what you plant is a bare seed, perhaps a grain of wheat or some other grain, not full-bodied plant that will later grow up. God provides that seed with the body he wishes; he gives each seed its own proper body.”

This theme continues until verses 42 to 44 where it says, “This is how it will be when the dead are raised to life. When the body is buried it is mortal; when raised, it will be immortal. When buried, it is ugly and weak; when raised, it will be beautiful and strong.

When buried, it is a physical body; when raised, it will be a spiritual body. There is, of course, a physical body, so there has to be a spiritual body.”
