The Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that formalized a translation exchange program between the Czech Republic and the Philippines on July 23 at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) building in Intramuros, Manila.

According to KWF Chairman and National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario, the two-year program will include translations of literary works in Czech and Filipino. One of the Filipino books to be translated in Czech is Ilaw ng Hilaga by his fellow National Artist for Literature Lazaro Francisco, along with Filipino poems, short stories, and anthologies.

As for Czech to Filipino translations, a book of Jaroslav Seifert’s selected poems was identified. Seifert is a well-loved Czech poet and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
