Vilma Santos receives her Ani ng Dangal trophy from NCCA Chairman Felipe de Leon Jr.
Veteran actress and Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos led this year’s roster of 54 Ani ng Dangal honorees at the awards night held on February 12 at the National Museum of the Philippines.
Organized by The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), led by its chairman Felipe de Leon Jr. and OIC-executive director Adelina M. Suemith, the Ani ng Dangal (meaning, harvest of honors) recognizes artists, cultural workers and works that have earned international awards and accolades during the past year.
Santos was recognized for winning the Best Actress trophy at the 2014 Dhaka International Film Festival for the Jeffrey Jeturian film Ekstra.
Other internationally acclaimed awardees include Leonardo Katigbak of ABS-CBN and GMA News TV’s Bayan Ko and Patricia Evangelista in the broadcast arts; while Siege Ledesma’s Shift, Jun Lana, Ronnie Quizon, Mikhail Red, Rekorder, Lav Diaz, Will Fredo for In Nominee Matris, Hazel Tapales Orencio, Jake Cuenca, Joel Lamangan’s Kamkam, Liza Diño, Allen Dizon, Diane Ventura, Mark Justine Aguillon, Nerissa Picadizo, Francis Xavier Pasion’s Bwaya, Roberto Reyes Ang’s TNT, Carlo Obispo’s Purok 7, Sandy Talag, Eduardo Roy Jr.’s Quick Change and Miggs Cuaderno for cinema.
For dance, Halili Cruz Ballet Company, A Team, Xtreme Dancers, Johnny Sustantivo Villanueva, Kayleen Mae Ortiz and Margaret Chua Lao, and Miguel Leopoldo Ignacio were honored; while Lloyd Edisonne Judilla Montebon, Novo Concertante Manila Choir, Saint Louis University Glee Club, Alvin Paulin and Aleron Choir were honored for music.

Sophia Marie Lee won at the literary arts category; while Ronnie Dayo, Robert John Cabagnot, Glenn Isaac, Mario Cardenas, Kenneth Cobonpue, Jophel Botero Ybiosa, Gina Meneses, Phoebelyn Gullunan, Jamille Blanca Aguilar, James Singlador, Danilo Victoriano, Ruston Banal, Trisha Co Reyes, Justen Paul Tolentino, Jamia Mei Tolentino, Jesus Ramos Tejada and Maria Angelica Tejada at visual arts.
The honorees’ trophies, clippings and ephemera will be featured at the Ani ng Dangal exhibit, which will be unveiled at the event.
The exhibit will be mounted at the SM North Edsa until February 20, SM Megamall from February 21 to 27, and at the Rizal Park on February 28.
The Ani ng Dangal is one of the highlights of NCCA’s celebration of National Arts Month this February.
‘Fringe’ takes over Manila
Considered as one of the world’s biggest, multi-arts festivals, “Fringe” has taken over Manila after officially opening on February 11 at the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.
Staged around the world including New York, Edinburgh, San Diego, Shanghai, and Edmonton, among others, Fringe is a series of events highlighting literature, music, theatre, dance, visuals, or combination of such art forms.
For the first ever Fringe Manila, the vision is to gather and showcase works of emerging and established Filipino artists. It also highlights the uniqueness of the Filipino perspective as it engages local and international audience.
Filipinos can expect over 300 performances and 90 events in 20 venues in just one city.
Headed by festival director Andrei Nikolai-Pamintuan, the Fringe Manila also provides a venue for collaboration among Filipino artists while they exhibiting their artworks to the world.
Moreover, Fringe Manila aims to achieve for the Philippines a financially and ethically sustainable art scene, which would give support to budding artists.
The Fringe team assists in the logistical and production aspects of various art shows under their umbrella of events that are different than the usual musical or theatrical performances, exhibits and the like. It is also inclusive of more interactive means of sharing ideas like forums, workshops and general merry-making for the participants.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) are set to stage a number of up-and-coming events under Fringe Manila.
Ballet Philippines’ two-night “Hugot sa Rosas” culminates today at CPP, while “Manhid: The Pinoy Superhero Musical” opens on the same venue on February 28, to be shown until March 8. On February 16, Fringe Manila will be launched at the NCCA Arts Gallery.
