Internationally-acclaimed brass sculptor and Ten Outstanding Young Men Awardee for 2006 Michael Cacnio brings his spectacular creations to the National Com-mission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Gallery with the exhibit Brass Act: Michael Cacnio at 45, opening on December 15.
Cacnio’s masterpieces have been featured in many galleries and exhibitions around the metro. In 2011, he has teamed up with Lego for a series of his brass-work contrasting with the plastic toy turned into art.
“Lobo,” another set of Cacnio’s sculptures were exhibited in the same year showcasing the monochromatic streak of brass against the colorful and lively glass-like balloons that identify the series.
His most recent exhibition was at the ManilArt 2014.
But throughout the years, the artist has flaunted elaborate body movements captured in the steely metal work, though his human forms are mostly faceless. To give his works a truly Filipino appeal, always present are the sombrero for the males, and the panyo and saya for the females.
The Filipino spirit is also highlighted through the themes and details of Cacnio’s creations. The Filipino family takes the spotlight in his “Mother and Child” and “Father and Son” series. His “Vendor” series pays tribute to the Filipino worker—the magtataho, the sorbetero and other Pinoy maglalako.
Made possible by NCCA, Our Lady of Fatima University and Gallery, and The Artery Manila, Brass Act: Michael Cacnio at 45 will run until January 30 at the NCCA Gallery in 633 General Luna Street, Intamuros, Manila. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and are scheduled by appointment for Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
