Experts, scholars convene at Philippine Studies meet

THE Philippine Studies Association (PSA), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), National Museum, the Philippine Social Sciences Council (PSSC), The Asia Foundation, UP Diliman Tri-College PhD. Philippine Studies Program, Philippine National Historical Society, Inc. and the Manila Studies Association joined forces in convening scholars of all things Filipino for the National Philippine Studies Conference at the National Museum from November 12 to 14.

The conference explored the many complexities of shifting perspectives employed by scholars in the Philippines in the face of today’s rapidly changing times.

With the theme “Philippines Studies in the 21st Century: Mapping the Shifting Terrains of Inquiry,” the conference enjoined a number of local and international experts to discuss on issues that the country is facing on the local, national and international level.

Ideas were tackled from the arenas of politics, governance, international relations, history, media, art and culture, anthropology, education, the tidbits and specifics in the study of the Philippines and, relevant to the events in the archipelago in the past year, gender issues and topics on disaster and disaster preparedness.

National Museum Director Jeremy Barns; NCCA Chairman Felipe de Leon, Jr.; Steven Rood, country representative for the Philippines for the Asia Foundation; PSA President and Conference Convener Bernardita Churchill among other notable personalities in the field graced the opening ceremony with their words.

Alongside the 5th NCPS is the celebration of PSA’s 30th anniversary. PSA Pioneers were awarded a Special Certificate of Recognition.

Among them were Prof. Fe Arcinas, Dr. Virginia Miralao of the Unesco National Commission of the Philippines and Prof. Dean Ofelia Angangco, founding president of PSA. Dr. Doreen Fernandez and Prof. Elsa Perez Jurado were conferred posthumous recognition; their certificates received by their respective representatives.
