The life of Apolinarion Mabini before the revolution will be tackled at the 23rd Manila Studies Conference
The Manila Studies Association Inc. (MSA) will celebrate its 25th founding anniversary through its 23rd annual conference from August 7 to 9.
The conference, co-sponsored by the Intramuros Administration (IA) and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, will be held at the site of its inaugural conference in June 1989, at the Teatrillo, Casa Manila, Intramuros.
It will also serve to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Apolinario Mabini in July and to mark History Month this August.
IA Administrator Marco Antonio Sardillo 3rd will be the keynote speaker.
Papers will be presented highlighting various aspects of Manila’s history and culture, as well as studies on national history: “A Quarter Century of Manila Studies: A Historiography of the Published Conference Papers of the MSA” by Marya Svetlana Camacho; “Apolinario Mabini Before the Revolution” by Arnaldo Mendoza; “The Mabini Shrine in Manila: A Hero in Search of a Home” by Lorelei de Viana; “Archaeological Excavation at Iglesia San Ignacio Site, Intramuros, Manila” by Angel Bautista; “Sulyap sa Santatlo: Iconography of the Santisima Trinidad as Depicted in Philippine Colonial Period Devotional Literature” by Martin Gaerlan; “The Female Entrepreneurs in 19th-Century Provincia de Manila” by Marco Lagman and Jonathan Villasper; “The Balmis Expedition and the Spread of Smallpox Vaccination in the Philippines, 1805-1807” by Thomas Colvin; “Public Health Directives in Manila in the Spanish Colonial Period in the Philippines” by Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor; “The Ateneo and UST Museums: Groundbreaking Educational Facilities in 19th-Century Philippines” by Glenda Oris; “Early Philippine Published Cookbooks: Savors of Cultural Concerns” by Felice Prudente Sta. Maria; and “Raising MingWen: Tradition, Integration and Lineage in a Contemporary Lion Dance Troupe Jose and Alain Austria.
Nick Deocampo will present a film and lecture, “Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo: 17th-Century Spiritual Visionary.”
The 2013 publication Manila: Selected Papers from the 22nd Annual Manila Studies Conference, edited by Camacho and published with a funding grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Committee on Historical Research, will be launched on August 8.
A special screening of the musical drama Ang Kababaihan ng Malolos, produced by Nicanor Tiongson, will be held on August 9.
