With a thriving theatrical scene in 2019, the Filipino audience can only look forward to more exciting productions — both local and international — as 2020 unfolds.

One of the first to whet the audience’s appetite for such treat is “Matilda The Musical.”

The upcoming Philippine stop of the international production is made possible by GWB Entertainment along with GMG Productions and Virtus Live.

“‘Matilda The Musical’ is a show that’s full of fun, it’s full of kids, it’s got lots of music, excitement and all features that the Filipino audience can appreciate. So it just seems natural to open 2020 with this show,” GMG Productions’ Robert Sewell told The Sunday Times Magazine in an interview.

“Matilda The Musical” is the multi-award winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), inspired by the beloved book by Roald Dahl. It has been a favorite novel of millions of people across the world since it was published in 1988.

With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, “Matilda The Musical: is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

The musical was commissioned by the RSC in 2010 and premiered at the RSC’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon, playing to sold-out audiences from November 2010 to January 2011.

Capturing the imagination of young and old alike, the RSC transferred the production to London’s West End in October 2011 where the show continues to play to sold-out houses at the Cambridge Theatre.

Winner of over 85 international awards, “Matilda” is the recipient of a record-breaking seven 2012 Olivier Awards including Best Musical and a joint Best Actress Award for the four girls who shared the title role.

To date, it has 16 Best Musical awards from different award-giving bodies and is now in its seventh year in London where it continues to delight audiences of all ages.

Adding more excitement to the arrival of “Matilda,” the producer of the musical in Manila confirmed they have added one more week to the Manila season.

“Matilda The Musical” will now run at The Theatre at Solaire in Pasay from March 5 to March 22,” Sewell announced in a tea party/media event earlier this week.

Moreover, for the shows that are in the final week, the producers have created the Two-Price Special for Tuesdays, Fridays and Sunday evening: one price across all orchestra seats, and one price across all balcony seats.

Finally, the producers also revealed the principle cast for the Manila season, which included Hayden Tee as Miss Trunchbull, Haley Flaherty as Miss Honey, Nompumelelo Mayiyane as Mrs. Phelps, Claire Taylor as Mrs. Wormwood and Stephen Jubber as Mr. Wormwood.

The rest of the cast will be announced as the musical’s premiere nears.
