THE Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in partnership with the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (Umpil), respected poets’ organization Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA) and science-and-technology company Merck Inc., conducted a national poetry seminar at the CCP’s Silangan Hall in Pasay City on Saturday.
Seminar lecturers were Umpil Chairman Michael M. Coroza, who discussed Filipino rhyme and meter, and Ateneo de Manila University professor Louie Jon A. Sánchez, who talked about figurative language and poetic sensibility.
The seminar, dubbed Programang Pambansang Edukasyong Pampanitikan (National Literary Education Program) is LIRA’s flagship advocacy project that has been traveling around the country to teach traditional Filipino poetry. Since its establishment in 2008, the project has benefited more than a thousand teachers and students. It was named one of the country’s Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations in 2011.
LIRA was founded in 1985 by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, also known as Rio Alma. From a small group of young writers, its membership grew to more than a hundred over the past three decades. Many of them have published critically acclaimed books; won in national and international literary contests; and become sought-after teachers, scholars, and arts and culture advocates.
