Lobby art exhibit to raise funds for East Avenue’s breast care center
Every October, The Peninsula Manila mounts its “Peninsula in Pink Campaign” as an annual initiative to raise awareness and funds in support of the Breast Cancer Awareness.
This year marks its sixth straight “Pink” endeavor, whose highlight, “The Art of Pink” features China’s most celebrated avant-garde photographer and multimedia artist, Chen Man. Four of her works have been unveiled at the hotel lobby, along with pink-infused dining and room experiences for guests to enjoy.
In keeping with the global commitment to support innovative art, The Peninsula Manila joins its sister hotels in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, Tokyo, Paris, New York, Chicago and Beverly Hills in presenting “Nao Nao ” an exclusively commissioned series of art pieces that will be installed at 10 Peninsula destinations around the world. Both exciting and intimate, the collection draws the sensual photographs that have cemented Chen Man’s style and success, re-conceptualized with a subtle feminine theme in reference to the “Peninsula in Pink” breast cancer initiative.
The artist’s lauded photographs are brought together for the first time on such a grand, international scale, and offer a unique opportunity for guests and visitors at each hotel to personally interact with the art in a novel way.
Each photograph will be covered by two pink dots—symbols of breasts and the colon, a punctuation that precedes a conversation. In a nod to The Peninsula Hotel’s focus on Chine this year, visitors will use traditional “Nao Nao” bamboo sticks to gently scrape the dots and slowly unveil the image behind them. Through her photographs the artist hopes that the removal of the punctuation will open up a dialogue about breast cancer and bring awareness to the cause.
On view at the hotel until October 31, the photographs will then be auctioned off and additional funds will be raised through the sale of the Nao Nao sticks, which visitors can purchase to scratch the piece and keep as keepsakes. The proceeds will be donated to the Philippine Foundation for Breast Care, Inc., which is rehabilitating the Breast Care Center of government-run East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City.
“In Southeast Asia, the Philippines has the highest incidence of breast cancer,” says hotel general manager Mark Choon. “One in every 13 Filipinos falls victim to it and as the general manager of an institution that is celebrating its 40th anniversary and has worked with various local organizations to help make a difference in the lives of Filipino people, I believe very strongly in the fight against this dreadful disease.”
This is the impetus behind The Peninsula Manila’s four-year-long partnership with the Philippine Foundation for Breast Care, Inc. as the charity of choice for its Art of Pink fundraising efforts. The hotel is also partnering with The Estée Lauder Companies, whose Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign is devoted to defeating breast cancer through education and medical research.
At the conclusion of 2015’s campaign, The Peninsula Manila had raised nearly P10,000,000—seed money that has been used to rehabilitate the Breast Care Center of East Avenue Medical Center. The center services 30 to 50 patients in a space that can barely accommodate 20 individuals. After a nine-month construction period, the center reopens this October 2016 with an expanded reception area, a new wing as well as a second floor that will house 20 brand-new chemotherapy infusion chairs that will supplement the two La-Z Boy recliners they currently have.
