Life continues on stage and in films in the midst of current socio-political events that are reason for anxiety.
After the successful three-week fun of Virgin Labfest 12 at the Cultural Center of the Philipines (CCP), the stage is now set for this new local theater season.
The musical Rak of Aegis continues its re-run at the PETA Theater Center, while Twin Bill Theater’s Suicide Incorporated at the new Performing Arts and Recreation Center in San Juan City also continues its run.
Meanwhile, set to open are Dulaang UP’s Ang Komedya ng Kalituhan (Comedy of Errors) by William Shakespeare, and Gantimpala’s Florante at Laura at the Camp Aguinaldo Theater and at various malls.
For high school and college students, Philippine Stagers’ Foundation’s (PSF) musical Katips, is being staged in various venues in Metro Manila, including select SM cinemas.
Despite its title, Katips is a serious musical about youth activists martyred during Martial Law. Vince Tañada writes, directs, and stars in Katips, with music by Pipo Cifra.
Red Turnip Theater is set to open its new theater season with Tribes, a critically-acclaimed British play by Nina Raine. According to Red Turnip, “Tribes is a thoughtful yet funny portrayal of how one family navigates the fact that their son Billy is deaf.” It stars Kalil Almonte, Teroy Guzman, Cris Pasturan, Angela Padilla, Dolly de Leon, and Thea Yrastorza. Topper Fabregas directs.
Tribes opens August 5 and will run until September 4 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Theater in Circuit Makati.
